Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox and Marvin Harvey

Marvin Harvey has almost trained the entire country of Mexico. Harvey is known for the hypothesis he did at Ottawa on the “art” of shooting. He created his own philosophy on shooting a basketball. It started as a single class assignment that had to be a scientific analysis (3) a searchable topic, founded principles, and proof that the topic was completely unbiased findings, and teachable … he named it the 3R’s – Ready-Rhythm-Release. Immediately after graduating from Ottawa, he quietly started transforming players using, what has become, the most recognized shooting form in the world today. His biography on the Ottawa University (4) website describes his as a person driven to be a “great teacher” and he has used that teaching in the sport of basketball; internationally. The Kansas Miracles – the First “Eight to IX” experimental team …

Harvey started the first “private-training” programs throughout Kansas and Missouri for players in the summers of their eighth grade year, going into their ninth grade season. Although he started with boys he also experimented on girls of the same age being able to shoot the pro level shot; the same as the boys. In 1990, Harvey wrote and produced a thirty-minute video, “Shooting the Basketball with Marvin Harvey” the Shot Doctor, that sold nationally and put the moniker Shot Doctor on the map. Around the same time he coached his first and only AAU team, the Kansas Miracle to a National Championship game. Continue reading

Basketball is not all kids learn at Marvin Harvey’s Workshop

After graduating he started experimenting on middle school age players, as he became a head coach for the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at Santa Fe Trail Jr. High School (5) in Olathe, Kansas. During this time he coached the boys’ team to three one-loss seasons.
From the late 1970’s to early 90’s he earned the nicknames Shot Doctor and the “Teacher”. He became a volunteer shooting coach for the Kansas University Women’s Basketball during the same period to test his theory on college players. He then started working basketball camps at the Kansas University Men’s Basketball, and was heavily influenced by the coaching style of Head Coach Larry Brown and his staff (RC Buford, Alvin Gentry, Bill Self, John Calipari), he began to get a better understanding of teaching the game versus coaching the game. He started teaching some of the KU men basketball players on the side, among these Calvin Thompson, Keith Harris, and Milt Newton, to name a few.
