Despite the absurdities in today’s basketball, at every level, including the breakdown in team defense and terrible Coaching that leads to easy baskets, it always comes down to making the basket, most of the time from an outside shot or a free throw.

As I have sadly witnessed, over and over again, in today’s basketball, chances are that you will have to fight through some crooked Coach who will do everything within their power to keep you from showing the skill you have acquired. Sadly, that is today’s basketball in the USA. Despite that, your first obligation is to learn and acquire the skill, and then go fight your battles.

Forget the lying myths repeated constantly as though they were actually truths. No player is a “born shooter,” that is non-sense.

 The shooting of the basketball is a skill and like any other skill, it has to be learned (with the correct information), practiced and maintained.

The war for today’s players and parents, is to sort through all the myth tellers, the uneducated opinion givers, the honest but mistaken Coaches, the money grubbing impostors, the confused and the “Coaches” who purposely undermine the progress of players because they want the credit for themselves or someone else who is an a$$ociate of theirs.

In advocating for proper shooting teaching and on behalf of the welfare of all players, believe me, I have made many enemies.

Enemies who attack me with lies and distortions, as well as attack my proven methods, and then later use them.

Yet, these critics refuse my ongoing challenge to meet me at the Shot Lab, with their “theories” and let’s compare the facts. Obviously, they know that all they can do is criticize and they don’t dare to “put up.”

The sad reality is that it is the players who suffer. Those who never reach their potential because of all of these foolishness.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and James Jones watched Miami’s victory (AP)”The buzz around campus and the Miami area is amazing,” Larkin said. “Everywhere we go – restaurants, grocery stores, anywhere – people are recognizing me and my teammates and they show a lot of love.”

Saturday’s 87-61 home victory over North Carolina was another step in the transformation of Miami basketball from anonymity to prominence. Miami Heat stars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and James Jones were part of a sellout crowd, and they each appeared to be especially impressed by one play in particular.

With just under eight minutes to go in the second half and Miami already leading by 22, Larkin caught an outlet pass in transition and decided to get a little fancy. He laid the ball high off glass and a trailing Kenny Kadji slammed it home with two hands, an alley-oop that had even James, Wade and Jones on their feet courtside, grinning and applauding.

The Larkin-to-Kadji jam in the above video was the highlight of a thoroughly impressive performance from the Hurricanes.

Larkin had 18 points and a career-high nine assists and Kadji and Durand Scott added 17 points apiece as Miami (19-3, 10-0) led from tipoff until the final buzzer to improve to 11-o at home this season. The Hurricanes’ 10 ACC wins are a school record — and they still have eight games left to go.

With a 2 1/2-game ACC lead and a manageable schedule remaining until a March 2 clash with second-place Duke, Miami appears to be a serious contender for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. There’s even an outside chance the Hurricanes could jump from No. 8 to No. 1 in the polls on Monday considering four teams ranked ahead of them have already lost.

That Miami is even in the conversation along with the likes of Duke, Indiana and Arizona is a testament to the job coach Jim Larranaga has done.

Since rejoining Division I in basketball in 1985, Miami has made the NCAA tournament just six times and has reached the Sweet 16 only once. With Larkin and Scott attacking the rim from the backcourt and Kadji, Reggie Johnson and Julian Gamble highlighting a deep frontcourt, Larranaga has a roster capable of going further than any previous Hurricanes team has.

In the conversation a few weeks ago, Larkin made it clear that’s this team’s goal.

“The rise of Miami has definitely started,” the sophomore said. “There’s no reason this program shouldn’t be in the Top 25 every year.”

She gets constant attention – from practically everywhere.

Florida International University junior guard Jerica Coley, the former St. Petersburg Catholic star, is stalked by defenders – and every conceivable junk defense – once she enters the arena.

No wonder. She’s the nation’s leading scorer, averaging 25.1 points per game. FIU has established a website – HolyColey.com – to celebrate her accomplishments and make her pitch for All-America status.

Coley is shy – practically embarrassed – about the publicity. Only the encouragement of her teammates allows her to accept it.

“I guess it’s exciting … kind of shocking, really … it’s overall OK,” said Coley, a 5-foot-7 point guard. “It’s not something you’re used to.”

That’s especially true for Coley. Not too long ago, on the recruiting trail, she was practically ignored.

“It was kind of mind-boggling,” said FIU sophomore guard Kamika Idom, formerly of St. Petersburg High, who is Coley’s cousin. “She had the game. Great academically. Great person. A lot of people just missed on her. They missed out.”

“From the minute I walked in the gym and saw her play, I turned to my assistant and said, ‘We’re going to get her,’ ” Russo said. “I believed in her in every way. FIU might be a little bit of a well-kept secret itself, but she loved the school. Her parents thought it was a great place.

“I knew she would be successful. Leading the nation in scoring? Well, I didn’t predict that. But I can’t say I’m surprised. She’s a great player.”

That was true in high school, where she doubled as a state champion-level tennis player.

During the basketball postseason, she scored 39 points against Lakeland Tenoroc, finishing one assist away from a quadruple double.

Said Tenoroc coach Vic Smith afterward: “We didn’t run out of gas. We ran into Coley. The scouting reports said she was the ice cream, cake and sliced bread. They didn’t lie.”

But some colleges seemed scared away by another statistic: 5-foot-7.

“I just didn’t get a lot of interest,” Coley said. “My coaches told me USF said they already had enough guards. I kept hearing I wasn’t big enough for certain schools. But when I got to FIU, I knew it was the place for me. I like the city of Miami. I like my professors. It has worked out beautifully. I’m happy. I’m doing my thing.”

“If you can play, you can play,” Idom said. “Jerica can play.”

She has proven that much at FIU.

Coley was sixth nationally in scoring (23.4) last season as a sophomore. To begin this season, she drove coast-to-coast and scored to beat Iowa, 66-65, finishing with 31 points. Wednesday, she had 33 points in a 66-55 win against Florida Atlantic, her 10th performance of 30-plus points this season.

“It takes a committee to stop her, not a couple of players,” Russo said.

She has a lethal crossover dribble. She gets to the basket, generally finding a way to produce points. She’s shooting 85 percent career from the free-throw line. She can stop-and-pop. And she’s more than willing to pass, creating opportunities for her teammates.

“Truthfully, we’re always better off with the ball in her hands,” Idom said.

Coley, who has 1,880 career points, wants to reach the NCAA tournament with the Panthers (14-9, 8-6 Sun Belt Conference). Beyond that, she’s focused on entering FIU’s Master’s program in nutrition, her major.

“Basketball is a way to get an education,” Coley said. “I’m here to play, but I’m here to study. I take that pretty seriously.

“I don’t know what’s ahead for me in basketball (with the WNBA), but I do know I’m getting my education. I’m improving myself.”

Coley also has improved her game, according to Russo. She’s more of a vocal leader. She handles possessions with more efficiency. She knows when to shoot, when to pass.

“I’ve never coached a more focused player,” said Russo, in her 34th season at FIU, where she has coached three All-American point guards. “Just the way she listens. My goodness! You tell her something and – Ding! Ding! Ding! – she just gets it.

“My only concern is her putting too much pressure on herself. Most coaches have to tell their players to do academics. I have to tell her to back away. She works so hard. She’s tremendously dedicated and genuine. That’s why everyone loves her so much.”

And that’s why something as seemingly audacious as HolyColey.com is treated like a badge of honor for the entire program.

“We try to get her out to the public as much as we can,” Idom said. “She’s so humble, but we feel she deserves all of this. She went unnoticed for so long. Now this is her time.”

Nobody has had a better January than Miami, and the sophomore guard has been a huge reason why. The son of former Cincinnati Reds great Barry Larkin has scored less in the last month but has been more well-rounded, averaging 11 points, six rebounds and 4.6 assists in the Hurricanes’ seven-game winning streak.

“He’s terrific at everything,” Miami coach Jim Larranaga said. “He’s a heck of a defender, he works so hard defensively, comes up with steals. He had ten rebounds and nine rebounds in our last two games, and he’s not even six feet tall. He runs the team, he shoots the three, he handles the press, just having an all‑conference caliber year.”
